The EPA sets a maximum contaminant level of 10 mg/L for nitrates in drinking water. Levels above that are considered unsafe — particularly for infants under six months, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions. If your home uses a private well, testing and treatment are your responsibility. And even on city water, nitrate levels can spike seasonally as spring and summer runoff peaks.
